ALBINO! hits up Nevada City

For those who weren’t lucky enough to actually attend Burning Man in Nevada over the Labor Day holiday (and survive what I heard was a 2-day mighty dust storm), the next best thing might be hearing a band that played there.

Yes, ALBINO! performed five shows at this famous (some say infamous) gathering. Now they plan to “reignite the Burner vibe” at Coopers Ale Works in Nevada City Friday night.

Lots of you already know this award-winning 10-piece Afrobeat ensemble from Berkeley. They are terrific, aren’t they?

Not a jazz band per se, Afrobeat music, which was popularized in Nigeria in the 1970s by the revolutionary Fela Kuti, borrows heavily from the jazz tradition. Expect to hear extended solo improvisations, sophisticated harmonies and an intricately arranged four-piece horn section.

Details: Doors at 235 Commercial St. open at 8:30 p.m. with ALBINO! beginning at 9 sharp. The price is $10. Go online at for more or call (530) 265-0116.

Wear your playa attire, if you dare!
