Afternoon crash on Highway 49 injures two

A two-vehicle accident on Highway 49 just south of Grass Valley during today’s afternoon commute injured two and tied up traffic in both directions.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. near Christian Life Way. A driver in a pickup reportedly struck a car head-on, said Jim Turner, a captain with Nevada County Consolidated Fire District.

The driver of the small sedan, whose name was unavailable, was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center after suffering injuries to his lower legs and chest.

The driver of the pickup, whose name was also unavailable, was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with a possibly broken ankle, Turner said.

Both drivers involved had to be extricated from their vehicles with the Jaws of Life, Turner said.
