About The Union – Tour – PrePress

All the elements of each page in The Union – the articles, the photos, the ads – come together in the pre-press area.

The completed pages are sent to an imagesetter – a machine that is just like a computer printer except that it produces full-page negatives of each page in the newspaper.

The pressroom crew uses these negatives (which look like giant photo negatives) to create the printing plates which will be installed on the press for each day’s edition. The plates are smooth to the touch; a chemical treatment causes part of the plate to attract ink for printing. Three big rolls of paper, each weighing aabout 800 pounds, are used for each day’s edition. That’s why we encourage recycling!
