Aanestad to receive charter school honor

Sen. Sam Aanestad will receive a special honor today at the Statewide Charter School Conference at the Sacramento Convention Center.

Aanestad has been selected as Charter School Legislator of the Year by the California Charter Schools Association, and will receive a special award from Association membership under the Hart-Vision Awards Program.

The award will be presented at the National Charter School Conference and the 13th Annual California Charter Schools Conference at the Sacramento Convention Center.

“I am deeply honored for this recognition and will continue to be a tireless supporter for all charter schools in California,” Aanestad stated in a media release. “Charter schools serve an important function in California and have demonstrated an exceptional ability to prepare our young students for the challenges of tomorrow.”

Aanestad (R-Grass Valley) introduced two charter school measures at the beginning of the current legislative session, and both are working their way through the State Legislature.

SB 604, known as “advanced apportionment,” allows charter schools to apply for and receive advanced state funding payments if it adds new grade levels from the previous school year.

Public school districts already receive the same type of advanced funding benefit. SB 846, known as “dry period financing,” allows charter schools to obtain “temporary” loans from county treasurers, just like public school districts receive.

The Hart-Vision Awards were created in honor of retired California Senator and former California Secretary of Education Gary Hart.

Hart authored legislation which led to the creation of charter schools during his tenure as a state legislator.
