A worrisome trend

There seems to be a disquieting trend abroad in the land: Anti-intellectualism. It manifests itself in distrust and denigration of our best-educated elite, be they scientists, journalists, politicians or experts of any stripe. This sort of phenomenon has occurred in other places in other times, often followed by jack boots.

At the same time, and perhaps causally, there is an inclination to accept as truth any statement or viewpoint that coincides with our individual bias. Possible sources, these days, are both multitudinous and multifarious.

Recently, a letter to the editor proclaimed that “liberals” were responsible for destroying our economy. Like many, the writer flings the word around like an epithet. I’m not sure what his conception of liberalism is, but according to Wikipedia, it is a broad array of ideas that consider individual liberty to be the most important political goal, emphasizing equal rights and equal opportunity. It supports freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of government, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy, and a transparent government. It’s not likely that that sort of philosophy could have brought about the undermining of our economy.

In truth, the causes of our economic distress are many and specific, and can be studied in any number of reputable publications, both liberal and conservative. Blame can be apportioned according to particular actions, or failures to act.

We all need to vet our sources. And appropriate credentials ought to count for something.

“Because I say so!” is not a good enough reason in a democratic society.
