A group of quilters plans to surprise 32 veterans Saturday by delivering handmade quilts at retirement homes around Nevada County.

The 10 members of Christian Women in Stitches have been working tirelessly to finish their creations in time for Veterans Day. The annual tradition was started by Ruby Lee Foster four years ago.

Foster has been a quilter since the 1970’s and uses her talent as a way to serve the community. She has also made quilts for local foster children.

“When you go in and give someone a quilt, the blessing you get in return is incredible,” she said.

Foster said many of the veterans she’s made quilts for are often extremely grateful, and many appreciate the company on Veterans Day.

“When they get the quilt in their hands, the look on their face is just amazing,” she said.

Christian Women in Stitches is made up of members of Sierra Presbyterian Church.
