A play for the young at heart

First of all, I want to congratulate the Foothill Theatre Company for the courage to put on such an unusual play. The actors truly have to find their “inner child” in order to portray animals, trees, wind, water and all the things that this very sensitive young child, Opal, can see.

In the program notes, much is made of the controversy surrounding the book and the play that is written after the book, which questions whether it is possible that it was written by a 6-year-old child.

To me this is not important. Maybe Opal wrote this down later in life from her memories. I have no doubt that a young child who is allowed to connect with nature and is not corrupted by TV and video games can see everything that Opal sees.

There are many accounts of this, if you look for them. In my view, the child communicates with nature spirits. A few times during the play Opal says, “The adults cannot see any of this,” and that is true. I encourage anyone who is young at heart to see this play, and to take your children 8 years and older, too!
