A Mother’s Day gift

What a lovely picture and story graced your front page the day before Mother’s Day.

For 30 years, ever since my son shared his sexual orientation with me, it has been my passion to try to help families understand and accept their loved ones who happen to be gay. It’s my reason for being here. For 30 years, I have been privileged to share in the lives of hundreds of gays and lesbians and their family members. Many stories of discrimination and ridicule were heartbreaking. Thankfully, many had a happy ending.

I have met Barbara, the subject of your compassionate article, and like her tremendously. She is truly a lovely person who radiates inner peace. She deserves it; how many of us could raise six children alone under “normal” circumstances and come out sane?

I commend Barbara for her openness and willingness to share her story and The Union for publishing it. It was a welcome Mother’s Day gift to see it on the front page.
