A minute can be enough

Five Nevada County Composers Cooperative members recently tackled a first for them: to write just 60 seconds of music revealing what lust means to them.

The 60-second interpretations by David Dvorin, Mikail Graham, Jerry Grant, Jay Sydeman and Mark Vance will be heard Friday at the Nevada City Winery during the next “Meet Your Composer” event.

“Not only was the provocative topic intriguing but the proposition of such limited time constraints was challenging,” Vance said. “Lust many times infers sexual desire but in a broader sense there is lust for power, wealth, knowledge, security, health, faith and more.”

“Each person has their own concept of lust, as do the composers,” he added.

The reduced time limit proved workable.

“We live in a bite-size society, like it or not. Our attention spans are becoming shorter,” Vance reasoned. “Consider the length of the average e-mail. What does a television commercial convey in 30 seconds? Given this logic, one minute seems like a substantial amount of time.”

“Five Minutes of Lust” will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the winery, located at 321 Spring St. in Nevada City.

Admission is $20, which includes wine and hors d’oeuvres. Since seating is limited, call 478-0983 for reservations. Check out http://www.nccomposers cooperative.org on the Web for more information.
