A blues happening at 5 Mile House

Did you know that once a month The Sierra Blues Society has a jam?

Sunday, the jam will take place in Nevada City with the Sacramento band, Groove Drop, hosting the affair. The sound is funk, soul, jazz and R&B, from classic Aretha Franklin and James Brown to contemporary Chaka Kahn and Bonnie Raitt.

Blues bands are invited to play after Groove Drop does its thing. There’s a limit, so come early and sign up. While you can use the host band’s equipment, no complete kit changes are permitted. “You never know who you might end up playing with … could be Angila Witherspoon, Mick Martin or Screamin’ Dave,” says Thom Myers of the Society.

The Sierra Blues Society, which is located in Grass Valley, has been having these jams for four years, from Sacramento to Reno. About four times a year the jam is in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area. According to Myers, 5 Mile house is a new venue for the group.

And for those planning to dine as well on Sunday, the restaurant has a steak and seafood menu with a Pacific Rim accent.
