8 injured at Nevada County summer camp

Eight people at a Nevada County summer camp were injured on the Fourth of July when a canoe-converted into a go-cart-like contraption toppled, sending two riders to the hospital in helicopters.

“It was one of those homemade go-carts,” said Capt. Patrick Sullivan with Nevada County Consolidated Fire District.

Just after noon, emergency services were dispatched to Camp Augusta on 17000 block of Lake Vera Purdon Road where eight passengers had reportedly been riding the soapbox-type vehicle when it rolled over, Sullivan said.

Six of the passengers were transported by ground to area medical facilities by either Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital ambulances or in private vehicles, while two had what was described as “moderate” injuries and were flown by air ambulance to trauma centers, according to a report filed by Consolidated Fire.

“Some head and chest trauma,” Sullivan said. “None appeared to be immediately life threatening, that we could see.”

Camp staff were present, along with a camp nurse, when first responders arrived, according to Consolidated Fire. Also on scene were Grass Valley and Nevada City fire departments.

“They could have been a lot worse,” Sullivan said.
