10/10/10: A great day for Ben to turn 10

A Deer Creek School fourth-grader had a rare and auspicious birthday this weekend: He turned 10 on 10/10/10.

To make things even better, even his name rhymes with the lucky number.

For this once-in-a-lifetime birthday, Ben Patterson compiled a bucket list of 10 things he wants to do in the near future.

The aspiring gearhead’s list shows a need for speed: A parachute jump, a Ferrari ride, a Corvette ride and a Orange County Ducati motorcycle ride.

Ben is “a curious and determined young man who aspires to discover how things work and what makes the world go round,” said his dad, Bhret Patterson.

One of four siblings, Ben’s roots run deep in Nevada County. His great-grandfather worked at the Idaho Maryland and Empire mines, and built the house where Ben lives today.

Ben’s other loves include pickles, pecan pie, hot sauce, English muffins with marmalade and playing board games with his brothers and sisters.

For his big day, the blue-eyed Grass Valley resident wanted to do something on the list. Most activities – such as hiking up Mt. Whitney and hiking Yosemite’s Half Dome – were too ambitious for one day.

The most promising on the list, provided Ben had consent from 12-year-old sibling Caleb, was No. 7: “Cut brother’s hair any way he wants.”
