The spirit of cooperation is alive and thriving at Sierra Jazz Camp, Nevada County’s own unique five-day summer music camp. All ages and all levels learn together, discovering the fun of improvisation or improving their skills.
All instrumentalists and vocalists are encouraged to attend.
Bill Douglass and Nora Nausbaum are the Mom and Pop of Jazz Camp, which is produced by Sierra Jazz Society and has been ongoing for 10 years. Many volunteers make this special event possible and the professional faculty of seven talented musicians includes Nevada County’s own John Girton on guitar, Kit Bailey on percussion and Randy McKean, saxophonist, new to jazz camp this year.
Bill Douglass grew up here, part of Nevada Union High School’s first graduating class. After high school, Bill left for the Bay Area for several decades honing his jazz bass skills and returned 18 years ago with his wife Nora, a jazz flutist, to take up residence in Chicago Park.
Both Bill and Nora’s love for music and community have cultivated this dynamic and event into a fun, kind and inspirational opportunity not to be missed.
Nevada City School of the Arts is the host and partner for the five-day instructional portion of the camp, beginning Wednesday July 19, through Saturday, July 22. The beautiful River Highlands Ranch in Smartsville will be the venue for a jazz concert on Sunday, June 23, at 1:30 p.m., where both faculty and students will perform. The public is invited to attend and tickets can be purchased at the door.
Sierra Jazz Society is a nonprofit organization that sponsors a jazz camp each summer for all ages, levels and instruments.
The jazz camp begin Wednesday, July 19, thru Saturday, July 22, with a performance by all faculty and students on Sunday, July 23.
For inspiration, education and fun, register now for Sierra Jazz Camp at http://www.sierrajazzsociety.com or call Bill or Nora at 273-5489.
