Nevada County Arts has offered numerous workshops for visual artists over the past year. While some of those workshops have also been beneficial for musicians and performing artists, NCArts is focusing its next workshop specifically for musicians and band members.
“So You Have a Band …” is a panel discussion featuring some of the biggest and most influential names on the local and statewide music-booking scene. Offering great tips on booking gigs, developing a following, and getting your music heard, the panel features the following experts:
Nancy Solyan began her music industry career in 1986 with Bill Graham Productions, becoming both a production assistant and personnel manager. She has toured with Beck and has been involved with countless productions in such venues as the Shoreline Amphitheater, Oakland Stadium and Arena, The Orpheum, The Warfield and many others. Currently she is the booking/events manager at the Center for the Arts.
Sara Zahn, with a background in both the art and fashion industries in New York, moved to Nevada City in 2009. Inspired by the amount of local young talent and the unfortunate lack of promotion and exposure, she soon became immersed in producing and documenting concerts around Nevada County. She is the manager/director of The Haven Underground, the premier subterranean venue in Nevada City.
Gretchen Bond is the executive director of the Miners Foundry Cultural Center, probably the most recognizable, unique and treasured small to mid-sized event venue in the area. Gretchen has been instrumental in creating, developing and supporting numerous cultural and educational community assets and is a master at organizing and promoting a wide variety of events.
Karen Carchidi was co-creator and producer of nightLIVE! (dubbed Northern California’s longest running live concert radio broadcast series), which featured hundreds of local, national and international artists, including Ani DiFranco, Solas, Los Lobos and many others. She was the original creator and executive director of the KVMR Celtic Festival. Also a co-creator and member of the Northern California Promoters Consortium, she has worked with managers of venues such as Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, The Palms in Davis, Freight and Salvage in Berkeley and others in Chico, Santa Cruz and Reno. She has years of experience as an FM Broadcaster with KVMR and KDVS, is currently the booking manager for both Live in Studio A with KDVS, which features a different band each week, as well as the weekly music offerings at California Organics. She is currently considering starting a new music series with NCTV.
Jesse Locks began her career at 19 as talent buyer for The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, booking such acts as Pearl Jam, Neil Young and The Shins. She has been a music writer and a festival producer with Arthur Magazine, working with top-level talent such as Joanna Newsom, Sonic Youth and Yoko Ono. In 2006, she started Grass Roots Record Company, an independent record label based in Nevada City, featuring such local talent as Mariee Sioux, Aaron Ross and Lee Bob Watson. She has written press releases for the Boston Globe, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle and many other publications.
Greg Cameron, is an accomplished drummer who has toured with several different rock and punk bands, including SWA, October Faction, Chemical People, Black Flag, Husker Du, St. Vitus, Meat Puppets, the Jeff Dahl Band, Cuddle and Nick Oliveri’s Mondo Generator. Most recently, he played for Marc Spitz Freestyle & Punk Rock Vatos. His main job on the panel will be to keep it real.
The workshop will cover important information for aspiring and experienced musicians, and NCArts has made a point of extending the low member price of $10 to middle school students and NEO members. A special rate of $15 is also offered to high school students. For those older than 18, NCArts members will be admitted for $10, and non-members for $20. Just the opportunity for bands to get to know these individuals is worth much more than the admission price, and everyone attending will likely earn a substantial return for such a small investment. Those in the music industry agree that bands will get the greatest benefit if all band members attend, as everyone will gain the same information, vision and motivation to move to the next level of musicality and success.
This workshop will cover promotional strategies that will be helpful to other performing and visual artists as well.
A drawing will take place for a $40 gift certificate from co-sponsor Foggy Mountain Music. “So You Have a Band …” also received support from Summer Thymes.
