KVMR to air only debate for Governor Thursday night
KVMR-FM Radio will broadcast the only gubernatorial debate of the California fall election at 7 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 4) (89.5 FM, kvmr.org streaming).
The Nevada City community radio station will pick up the broadcast from The California Report, a statewide radio news program that’s returning weekday mornings to KVMR later this month.
Election favorite and Incumbent Gov. Jerry Brown agreed to the single debate with Republican challenger Neel Kashkari in mid-August. Under California election rules, only the two top vote-getters in the June primary are on the ballot in the November general election.
KQED’s politics editor John Myers will moderate the debate, while The California Report’s morning host Rachael Myrow will host radio coverage of the election special, airing live from Sacramento.
Meanwhile, KVMR also is planning a live broadcast of an election forum on Proposition S, which would replace the current Nevada County medical marijuana ordinance. That is currently scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 23, with The Union publisher Jim Hemig serving as moderator.
More than 60 pairs of tickets to music and variety events throughout the KVMR listening region will be offered for listener donations this Friday during KVMR’s first ever “Ticketpalooza.”
“It’s so important to us to support live music throughout this area,” explained KVMR Membership Coordinator Adrianna Kelly. “And we’re giving something back by promoting these great shows.”
Ironically, all of the tickets will be offered for less than their actual value during music shows and specials from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday (89.5 FM, kvmr.org streaming)
“It’s a technique we’ve developed called ‘reverse scalping’,” quipped Program Director Steve Baker. “It’s a way to make shows more affordable for our listeners yet still raise money for our operations budget.”
Promoters and producers have donated the tickets to the station for shows ranging from singer-songwriters Melissa Etheridge and Roseanne Cash to the Acrobats of China, an evening with actor/activist Peter Coyote and the all-star guitar cast of Experience Hendrix.
Participating venues include the Center for the Arts, Miner’s Foundry Cultural Center, the Harris Center in Folsom, Harlow’s in Sacramento, Mondavi Arts Center in Davis, among others.
Tickets will also be available for next week’s Strawberry and American River music festivals as well as KVMR’s own Celtic Festival Sept. 27-28.
For a list of tickets to be offered during Friday’s Ticketpalooza, visit the station’s website kvmr.org.
Sacramento comedian Jack Gallagher will be a guest deejay on the Morning Show next Monday during the 9 a.m. hour.
Gallagher — who had a recurring role in the HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and has done stand-up on “Tonight” and other TV shows — will be selecting some of the original versions of songs he and his band will be performing at Harlow’s in Sacramento Sept. 26 for his “The Joke’s On Me” rock’n’roll event.
A weekly wrap-up of news and oddities about community radio station KVMR, a noncommercial station offering diverse musical programming, independent news and provocative public affairs from about 180 volunteer “citizen-broadcasters.” Complete program listings are available at kvmr.org
