Holidays bring gifts of song

Nevada County Arts
Special to Prospector

The holiday season is approaching quickly. The storefronts are bedazzled with festive window décor, and our historic downtowns will be brilliantly alight with the “spirit of the season.”

At Nevada County Arts, we encourage you to enjoy being “home for the holidays” with all the arts and culture we have to enjoy right here in our community.

“Joy to the World,” “Deck the Halls” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” are among the favored carols that come to mind this time of year. Indeed, the season of festive songs and singing to your all-time favorites is right around the corner and pretty much a guarantee in Nevada County.

Did you know that according to Chorus America, there are more than 270,000 choruses across the country? We have more than our share of exceptional community choirs right here in the heart of the Gold Country with NC Arts members: Bear River and Nevada Union High School Choruses, the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir, Music in the Mountain’s Chorale, Sierra Master Chorale, and the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus.

Starting with the first weekend of December, the 7 and 8, will brighten up your season with Music in the Mountain’s “Home for the Holidays” with the MIM Chorale, Lyman Gilmore Middle School Choir, and the MIM Holiday Orchestra. The Truckee Tahoe Chorus will be singing at the Resort at Squaw Creek in Truckee.

The second weekend continues the holiday cheer with NUHS and BRHS’s winter concerts Dec. 12 and 13, and Sierra Master Chorale and Orchestra’s “Spirit of the Season” Dec. 14 and 15.

On Dec. 21, sing along to The Messiah with Music in the Mountains, and relish the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir with some traditional Cornish music infused into their holiday concert to celebrate the season.

In the words of chorister Roberta Frank, who sings with both MIM and SMC, “There is nothing better for my soul and heart than to sing with a loving, talented, creative, joyful group of people who are like family to me and who love to share this experience with our community.”
