Six of the nation’s leading poets will read at the Miners Foundry in Nevada City on Friday, June 23, offering a lineup of excellence rarely seen outside the top writing conferences and literary festivals to the local public.
Acclaimed poets Francisco Aragón, Forrest Gander, Robert Hass, Brenda Hillman, Sharon Olds, and Gregory Pardlo are all participating in the reading as a stop-off on their way to the annual Community of Writers workshops in Squaw Valley, and donating their Nevada City appearances to raise funds for Community of Writers scholarships.
The evening begins at 7 p.m. and will be emceed by Nevada County poet laureate Molly Fisk. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door, with discounts available to groups of 10 or more. A signing and reception with the poets will follow.
The poets appearing include three Pulitzer-Prize winners, a former U.S. Poet Laureate, a National Book Critics Circle Award winner, and a winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. This Community of Writers benefit follows on the heels of the immensely successful Sierra Poetry Festival produced by the Nevada County Arts Council in April, creating a synergy that was not lost on Community of Writers director Brett Hall Jones.
“As the director of the Community of Writers and a Nevada City local, it is particularly gratifying to welcome these beloved poets to the Community where I live,” Jones said. “With a long history of attracting writers and poets, this area is becoming a poetry destination once again thanks in part to our local sponsors, the Entrekin Foundation, Yuba Lit and Nevada County Arts. We are proud to be a part of this revival!
“This event represents a rare opportunity for poetry and literature lovers to hear and meet such well known poets.”
The six poets appearing are both esteemed and diverse.
Francisco Aragon is the author of Puerto del Sol and Glow of Our Sweat, and editor of the groundbreaking anthology The Wind Shifts: New Latino Poetry.
Forrest Gander’s many collections include Core Samples from the World and Eye Against Eye. He had been a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
Robert Hass is former Poet Laureate of the United States, and a winner of the Pulitzer Prize as well as a National Book Award.
Brenda Hillman’s many collections include Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire; she is a winner of the Los Angeles Times Books Prize and the William Carlos Williams Prize.
Sharon Olds is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Critics Circle Award; her many collections include Stag’s Leap and Odes.
Gregory Pardlo is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of the collections Totem and Digest.
Funds raised by this special evening will help emerging and developing poets study with mentors of these readers’ caliber.
For 46 summers, the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley has brought together poets and prose writers for separate weeks of workshops, individual conferences, lectures, panels, readings, and discussions of the craft and the business of writing. As the organizers write, “Our aim is to assist writers in the refinement of their craft and thus, in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual support, move them closer to achieving their goals.”
The Community of Writers was co-founded in 1969 by prolific novelist and longtime Nevada City resident Oakley Hall.
