Simonett, Easy Leaves in GV Sunday
Trampled By Turtles’ lead vocalist and songwriter Dave Simonett will perform for Grass Valley audiences with The Easy Leaves opening during a Nov. 8 show presented by The Center for the Arts.
In 2014, Simonett released his first solo EP, “Razor Pony” on his Minneapolis-based record label, Gndwire Records.
In 2003, Simonett formed Trampled by Turtles as a side project. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, after a group of car thieves ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn’t rely on amplification.
After relocating from Duluth to the city of Minneapolis, Simonett recognized how he lost touch with a version of himself, the side that is connected with nature, something he had taken for granted during daily drives in the middle of nowhere.
“This was a very important ritual for me. Solitary time in a nearly untouched landscape is my version of church, so I think there is a bit of loss of religion in a lot of my work these days. I’ve always been a little obsessed with our struggle to stay connected to our simple animal side, the part of our nature that lived off the earth, hunted live game, worshipped trees and mountains. I believe a lot of sadness is caused by feeling disconnected with the rest of nature.”
Endless human struggle remains a constant theme in Simonett’s music.
“I’ve always felt there are various ways humans attempt to explain the unexplainable: To keep the fear of the darkness that waits for all of us at bay, the death of a loved one, the parting of friends, the changing leaves, the loss of love. All the little parts that come and go. In a way it’s refreshing because the knowledge that nothing will ever stay the same offers innumerable opportunities for rebirth.”
