‘Rat Packers’ come to Penn Valley for Italian Festa Saturday, Sunday

The Italian Festa is bringing amore to Penn Valley, with music, food, wine and entertainment for the whole family Saturday and Sunday at Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley.

Events start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with a bocce tournament at the lawn bowling courts.

The Festa’s main concourse opens at 11 a.m. daily, with musical acts starting at noon.



Special events include a Grape Stomp and Meatball Eating Contest. Also, attendees may explore their Italian heritage with help from a local genealogist.

The Dean-O-Holics – a nationally recognized Rat Pack tribute band with local roots – take the stage at noon and 4 p.m. daily.




“Dino” and Dean-o-Holics leader Bob Caudle is a graduate of Nevada Union High School and co-manages B&B Events & Entertainment in Grass Valley.

Caudle and others – impersonating Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Monroe, Bobby Darrin and Cab Calloway, among others – will bring the days of cool to life.

The 12-year-old Rat Pack cover band tours nationally.

Twice, the Dean-O-Holics have received the National Rising Star Award for best Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin tribute bandOther musical groups also will play each afternoon at the Festa.

— Italian music fused with jazz and world rhythms will be offered by Il Sole, a quartet that features internationally recognized musicians with Vegas-show sensibilities.

— Ancora! is another Northern California band, presenting Italian-American standards, contemporary Italian songs, romantic ballads and danceable Italian folk tunes.

— More acts include singer-songwriter duo Gibson and Gray, and the Taylor Chicks.

Attractions include food and wine vendors, Italian cooking demonstrations, displays of local Italian culture and families and children’s activities.

Festa hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Tickets cost $10 and includes all entertainment; active-duty military and children younger than 12 are free. A full schedule is at NCIFIC.org/Italian-Festa – click on “Event Program.”

Festa host is the Nevada County Italian Cultural Foundation, honoring the legacy of our area’s Italian immigrants. Proceeds support the foundation’s scholarship program.
