With their eclectic mix of funk, soul, reggae, Latin, and electronica Brooklyn-based band, The Pimps of Joytime will bring their one-of-a-kind performance to Grass Valley March 26 for a dance concert presented by the Center for the Arts.
Since their formation in 2005, The Pimps of Joytime have toured non-stop. Through his songs, bandleader Brian J invites listeners to enter a world of infectious dance grooves and indelible melodies. Spending formative years in New York City, New Orleans and Los Angeles, Mista J honed his craft to become an accomplished live performer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, according to his bio.
In 2005, Brian began to assemble a group of soulful vocalists and musicians. The diverse sound and spirited attitude of The Pimps of Joytime is strongly influenced by the Brooklyn DJ culture and live music scene from which they emerge.
Since 2007, the group has grown from playing basement parties down the street to headlining more than 100 shows each year, with stops along the festival circuit at: Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Outside Lands, All Good, the VooDoo Experience and more.
The Pimps’ debut record, “High Steppin’” dropped in 2008 on Wonderwheel Recordings to critical acclaim from NPR and BBC, followed by their sophomore release, “Janxta Funk!” in 2011.
Recent collaborations with artists Cyril and Art Neville of the Neville Brothers and Roy Ayers have helped the band connect to its roots. The exponential growth of the band’s fan base can be attributed to a blend of musical styles, including elements of afro-beat, salsa, rock and roll and electronica.
Tickets to the 8 p.m. March 26 show are $20 for members, $24 for the general public and are available at the Center’s Box Office in person, by phone at 530-274-8384 ext. 14, online at http://www.thecenterforthearts.org or at BriarPatch Co-op.
