“Of Mice and Men” represents the first Broadway offering from the popular series National Theatre Live, broadcasting British theatre to cinemas around the world. Starring James Franco and Chris O’Dowd, this critically-acclaimed production of Steinbeck’s classic was captured live in New York and shows twice in the next week at Sierra Cinemas in Grass Valley.

The first showing is at 7:15 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 6) and again at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 12).

“Of Mice and Men” began as a novella published in 1937 by Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck. This Depression era story is one of the most read books in schools across the country, despite appearing on the American Library Association’s list of Most Challenged Books of the 21st century.

The play is an essential adventure, an inspirational portrait of the American spirit and a heartbreaking testament to the bonds of friendship. Of Mice and Men tells the story of George (James Franco) and Lennie (Chris O’Dowd), an unlikely pair of friends drifting from job to job across the farms and fields of California, holding fast to their dream of one day having an acre of land they can call their own.

The current production, starring Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner James Franco and Tony Award nominee Chris O’Dowd and directed by Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro, overcame numerous hurdles to secure a spot in the National Theatre Live season. Spurred by James Franco and producer David Binder, the project met the right criteria for a successful translation to the cinema screen, and became the first Broadway show to be successfully captured live and distributed by BY Experience, distributor of NT Live and the Met Opera Live in HD.

The production was nominated for two Tony Awards, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Chris O’Dowd.

Tickets for “Of Mice and Men” are $18 for adults and $15 for seniors, children, and students with ID. Group rates are also available but must be purchased in advance.
