This Friday night at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, Movies Under the Pines presents the 2003 Academy award-winning Pixar film “Finding Nemo” (G), starring Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, and Alexander Gould.

“Finding Nemo” is set in the warm and colorful waters of the Great Barrier Reef. A Clown Fish named Marlin lives safe and secluded in his anemone home with his only son, Nemo. Fearful of the ocean and its unpredictable risks, he struggles to protect his son. Nemo, like all young fish, is eager to explore the mysterious reef. When Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from home and thrust into a tacky dentist’s office fish tank, Marlin finds himself the unlikely hero on an epic journey to rescue his son.

Part of the inspiration for “Finding Nemo” can be traced to writer-director Andrew Stanton’s childhood memory of the fish tank in his dentist’s office and his sympathy for the fish. Another piece came years later, when Stanton was the father of a 5-year-old boy and realized the danger of being an overprotective parent. Between the two memories, Stanton had the emotional anchor for the film, and the Pixar team had the perfect new realm for a CG adventure.

“In this seamless blending of technical brilliance and storytelling verve, the Pixar team has made something as marvelously soulful and innately, fluidly American as jazz,” wrote Entertainment Weekly.

The film festival brings in state of the art projection and sound to create an outdoor movie theatre on the grass at each venue. Before each screening NCFF curates a special pre-show that includes screening local filmmakers works, movie trivia with fun festival prizes, and other events specific to each screening.

Beer, wine, popcorn, and soft drinks available for purchase. Outside food and non-alcoholic drinks allowed. Outside alcoholic beverages prohibited. Blankets and low back chairs are suggested.

Movies Under the Pines is presented by the Nevada City Film Festival, City of Nevada City and the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Upcoming films includes The Wizard of Oz (June 24 @ Nevada County Fairgrounds), Back to the Future (July 8 @ Nevada County Fairgrounds), Edward Scissorhands (July 9 @ Pioneer Park) and The Goonies (August 27 @ Pioneer Park).
