Mixed-media exhibit now at Szabo

Local artist Liz Collins will exhibit her newest mixed-media paintings at Szabo Winery, 316 Broad St. in Nevada City now through Jan. 3.

Collins has been well known for her whimsical tipsy perspective oil pastels for more than 25 years. In the last three years, her work has evolved and moved into mixed media: oil pastel, acrylic, maps, resists, pastes and a variety of other materials, all an exciting change for the artist.

Her newest body of work, in a fun painterly style mixed with international maps, is inspired by her fourth trip to India.

“Though I have been to India several times, I have always been timid to paint it, afraid of the allure of cliche saris and turbans,” she said. “But this time a door opened for me artistically. As I watched people in their everyday activities, I realized that what I saw was fairly universal. For example, there is a flower vendor in every country. All my previous world travel bubbled to the surface, so painting these people of the world including their maps has been incredibly fulfilling.”

Join Collins at an art reception at Szabo Winery from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
