Local musician Mike Shapiro will be playing a show with Phil Missamore on bass and John Basa on drums at the Open Book, 671 Maltman Drive in Grass Valley, at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday).

Shapiro previously played with William Penn and His Pals, a seminal 60s group that regularly opened for national acts like the Dave Clark Five, the Yardbirds, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Jefferson Airplane and Them. The “Pals” included Gregg Rolie and Micky Hart.

Over the next 30 years, Shapiro performed at top venues in San Francisco, such as Lou’s Pier 47, John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom Room, and Foley’s Irish Bar on Union Square.

“Mike has the uncanny ability to feel what the audience wants and the versatility to give it to them with his wide repertoire,” said Will Dann of The Open Book.

Shapiro specializes in ‘60s British Rock, and ‘50s and ‘60s American music.

The Open Book’s partner business, Sierra Mountain Coffee Roasters, will be serving food and drinks during the show.

Admission is $10 at the door.
