Three bands — including many musicians with local ties — will perform Saturday at Un-Church, 220 Bresee Place, Grass Valley.
Un-Church is located on the site of the former Church of Nazarene, which has been recently transformed by Ben Milner into a multi-purpose cultural space dedicated to arts and music.
Headliner band Loving You plays at 8 p.m; Local band Chat Room performs at 7 p.m. The third band, Beautiful Dudes, plays at 9 p.m.
Admission to the all-ages concert is by sliding scale donation, $5 to $20 suggested.
Loving You is the musical collaboration of experimental cellist Chris Lancaster and vocal performance artist Alison Clancy.
The pair have been celebrated for their live shows, where they entrain listeners within a web of looped cello riffs, soaring melodies and lyrics that resonate with devastating honesty.
Using technology to unlock the full potential of the cello, Lancaster beats the body of the instrument like a drum and uses effects and amplification to match the power of a full band.
Clancy, a Nevada County native who attended the Tisch Dance Conservatory at New York University, has now turned songwriter and delivers haunting, visceral performances that are equal parts dance and song.
Clancy, who once started all-girl punk band, Huff This!, in the basement of The Metropolitan Opera, performed with The Metropolitan Opera ballet for six years and also worked on fashion and fine art projects.
She has remained connected to the local dance community by teaching and choreographing every year for Nevada Union High School’s dance program.
Lancaster is an internationally renowned cellist and composer who just premiered a new work for The Gothenburg Opera Ballet in Sweden.
Loving You recently performed at The Guggenheim Museum in NYC. Clancy and Lancaster will be headed back to Sweden to write music for a new production of Romeo and Juliet in the spring.
Also performing Saturday will be local band Chat Room (Tyler Cook, Chad LaBerge, Jesse Sabin, Chris Streng and Conor Lee) and Beautiful Dudes (Art Echternacht, Jonah Wells and Tom Bevitori).
