This Saturday at Grass Valley’s Del Oro Theatre Sierra Theaters presents Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot as the latest offering of The Met Opera Live in HD.

(The show airs 9:55 a.m. Tickets are $22 adults; $20 seniors; $15 children. See online at or at the Del Oro box office.)

How do I love Turandot? Let me count the ways. Puccini’s final and most grand opera of his output has brilliant orchestration, glorious choral singing, and the most recognizable tenor aria of them all, “Nessun dorma.” The opera is crammed with energetic ensembles and dramatic flourishes. From its opening marching chords and the chinoiserie touches — gongs, bells, wood blocks — we are immediately and relentlessly thrust into the fairy-tale China of the libretto. The libretto, based on a commedia dell’arte play by Carlo Gozzi, tells the tale of Prince Calaf, exiled and in hiding, who falls in love with the icy Princess Turandot. Problem: the set is lined with the decapitated heads of her prior, unsuccessful suitors. They sing, too. Highest possible recommendation for this one: I love it !!
