This year there were 77 wines entered in the Nevada County Fair, an increase of more than 20 percent from last year. There was an increase in the white, blush, and fruit wine categories but red wines were still in the majority representing 55 percent of all the wines entered. The overall quality of the wines was quite high with multiple wines seeking the top prizes.

Congratulations to Debbie Rickman for not only winning the Best Fruit Wine category with her 2013 Plum Wine but also winning the Best of Show Award as well. Mark Machado won the Best White Wine Award with his 2013 Gewurztraminer. Dan Kruger won the Best Red with is 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Block 14.

Other important award winners included Dave Elliot for Best Syrah, Jeff Struthers for Best Zinfandel, and Bill Betts for Best Other Red Varietal or Blend. In addition to winning the best Cabernet Sauvignon Award for his 2010 Block 14, Dan Kruger won the Best Label Award as well. In total the judges awarded 19 Gold and 22 Silver Medals. Gary Glaze and Jim Garrett were The Silver Bullet Award winners.

“There is often a bias against fruit wines as not being serious,” said Chief Judge and competition organizer Rod Byers. “Congratulations to Debbie Rickman. It is really an achievement for a fruit wine to wine Best of Show.”

This year’s panel of judges included Jack Starr, Vanessa Wich, Kate Garrett, Mark Foster, Pete Enochs, and Gary Moffat. Thanks to all the great local sponsors including the UPS Store – Grass Valley, House of Print and Copy, Gary and Sharon Deardorff, Sierra Wine and Grape Growers, Avanguardia Winery, Solune Winegrowers, Double Oak Vineyards & Winery, Nevada City Winery and Pine Hill Wine Works.
