Jazz quartet to perform Friday

On Friday, the Stonehouse will present an evening of music with the Bruce Kelly Jazz Quartet.

Jazz vocalist Bruce Kelly electrifies with keen passion and a voice rivaling legends, such as Lou Rawls, Johnny Hartman and Arthur Prysock. Kelly just released his CD, “Invitation To A Song,” and is presently preparing to record his next CD.

“The one constant in my life has been music, particularly jazz,” Kelly said.

This weekend, the Bruce Kelly quartet will treat Nevada City to an array of jazz classics, standards and some blues. Kelly’s vocal talents are backed by a trio of superb, top-flight musicians. On piano and organ will be Chet Chwalik, of Sacramento.

“I always call Chet when I have a gig. When you hear him, you’ll know why,” Kelly said.

On bass is the “Maestro” Bill Douglass, a local musician who has played and recorded with some of the jazz greats, including Mose Allison and Marian McPartland.

They will be joined by one of the best jazz drummers on the West Coast — Mat Marucci. The list of musicians Marucci has worked with reads like a “who’s who” of the jazz world — including Jimmy Smith, Eddie Harris, Les McCann and James Moody.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show runs until 10 p.m. Friday at the Stonehouse in downtown Nevada City. Admission is $15.
