Haunted tours return to Grass Valley, Nevada City in October

When actor/writer Mark Lyon initiated his historical ghost walks in the summer of 2004, he had no idea that he would still be offering his tours 10 years later, that they would grow to include Grass Valley and the interior of the Holbrooke Hotel or that they would lead to several other projects involving ghost stories.

“My first tours were the direct result of a conversation with a friend about a ghost tour she had enjoyed in England and her suggesting that someone should offer historical ghost walks in Nevada City,” Lyon said. “As I had been collecting and telling ghost stories my entire life, I thought that conducting such a tour for a few weeks would provide an enjoyable but short-lived, one-summer-only diversion. No one could be more surprised than me by either their longevity or by the many unexpected opportunities, which have arisen as a result of the tours.”

His tours have returned for the month of October, being offered at 7:30 p.m. every Friday in Grass Valley and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays in Nevada City.

Earlier this year, Lyon was invited to perform an original one-man play of traditional ghost stories at the Listowel Writers Week Festival, Ireland’s preeminent literary event of the year, and while in Ireland, he also performed the play at three Irish heritage sites, including haunted Charleville Castle, often referred to as “the spookiest castle in Ireland.”

“While performing at Charleville,” Lyon said, “I was given the rare honor of sleeping for two nights in the most haunted room in the castle. Although I had been informed that two previous guests who had attempted to spend the night in this room had fled in terror upon encountering horrific ghostly entities, I didn’t experience anything out of the ordinary. Perhaps, the ghosts decided that if they were to make an appearance, it would only encourage me!”

The local tours, hosted by Lyon, are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 – 12 (those 5 and under are free) and can be paid at the time of tour. Lyon doesn’t accept reservations. Haunted Grass valley tours begin at the Grass Valley Library, 207 Mill St. The Nevada City tours begin at 210 Broad St.
