The final ballet of the 2014-15 season of ballets broadcast live from the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow comes this Sunday to Sierra Cinemas. A 20th century classic, “Ivan the Terrible,” will be broadcast live once only at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Drawing on the music composed by Prokofiev for the 1944 Eisenstein film, Ivan the Terrible is a work in the true Bolshoi style. Yuri Grigorovich’s powerful and fascinating epic dramatizes Ivan the Terrible’s controversial reign, and portrays events in 16th century Russia in visually stunning scenes. His choreography, full of vigor, strength and wild jumps, also includes grace and fragility in the female roles. Sensitive classical and powerful character dance blend to create a lyrical epic, rich in the colors of medieval Russia.

The Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, one of the greatest music and dance stages in the world, was founded in 1776 and to this day remains a spearhead of Russian culture. With more than 250 dancers, the Bolshoi Ballet is one of the largest and most celebrated ballet companies in the world. Its annual repertoire of up to 30 titles per year includes classical masterpieces, rare productions and outstanding works by the most famous contemporary choreographers. Moreover, thanks to its school, the Bolshoi keeps the revered tradition of classical ballet alive through new generations of talented young dancers.

The 2015-16 season will begin Oct. 11 with Giselle. Other titles to look forward to next season include: Balanchine’s Jewels, Grigorovich’s Spartacus and Don Quixote.
