DeJazz Vu Big Band to play two shows Sunday at Nevada County Fair

DeJazz Vu Big Band, a 17-piece jazz big band, will perform at 2:30 and 4 p.m. Sunday at Nevada County Fair.

The band is led by trumpet player Roy Kaufmann and Ken Carter, Nevada Union High School band director.

Vocalist/actress Grace Fae, of the ‘Savoy Blonde’ combo, joins the band with some jazz standard vocals..

The musicians are mostly from Nevada County(one from Marysville) and substitutes come from Lincoln, Oregon House, Sacramento and El Dorado Hills. Subs are always needed for a big band.

Kaufmann moved to Nevada City in July 2013 from San Jose, where he was active in big bands, jazz octets and combos, musical shows, dances with large and small musical groups, and percussionist in “The Penninsula Pops” orchestra, now “The California Pops.” He and Carter formed the big band in January 2014.

Kaufmann credits Cheryl Woldseth, director and conductor of the Nevada County Concert Band, for helping staff the band in the beginning.

Also, Kaufman and Carter, along with “Eva and Gary,” a guitar and vocal duo, have started Jazz Jams, which played at Summer Thyme’s cafe in Grass Valley.
