The music of Touré-Raichel Collective crosses boundaries of country, culture and tradition. Vieux Farka Touré and Idan Raichel will bring their masterworks of collaboration and improvisation to Grass Valley audiences during a Sunday performance presented by the Center for the Arts.

Touré-Raichel Collective brings together Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli superstar Idan Raichel. The two met by chance at an airport in Europe and quickly forged a deep friendship.

This easy bond led to an impromptu get together at a small studio in Tel Aviv with Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian calabash player Souleymane Kane. The acoustic and spontaneous recording session could only be described as magic.

The two “play together like ballroom dancers dance — with a quick anticipation of the next move, an instinctive knowledge of what the other might do next,” described one writer from

Music critics hailed the album, “The Tel Aviv Session.” Pop Matters named the recording “the best album of the year,” called it “an intercultural freeform acoustic masterpiece” while The Wall Street Journal called it “deeply affecting.” The recording reached the number one spot on the iTunes World Music sales charts and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard World Music Chart.

The new Touré-Raichel Collective album, The Paris Session was released on Cumbancha Sept. 30.

Tickets to Sunday’s 7:30 p.m. show are $32 for members of the Center, $38 for the general pubic and are available at the Center’s Box Office in person, by phone at 530-274-8384 ext. 14, online at or at BriarPatch Co-op.
