Bill Gainer promotes social change at North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center

Local poet Bill Gainer will host “100 Thousand Poets For Change” Saturday at the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center. The gathering will be one of many occurring around the world to focus on the same cause — social concern.

“‘100 Thousand Poets For Change’ is one of the greatest audience participation pieces of social concern to come around in a long time — and we are part of it,” Gainer said. “The idea is to simply express your feelings about the need for change, to bring us all together in community and to share who we are.”

The event, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, is free. Participants are encouraged to bring a poem of social, political or cultural comment — read it and have it included in the box.

“Oh yes, the box. There will be a box for all to put their poems in, if you choose. The box will be shipped off to the president (whoever that person may be then) — together we can be heard,” Gainer said.

“100 Thousand Poets for Change” is not only a message of concern but one of hope and celebration; it is a message of possibility! All subjects are open — domestic, national, world and personal — anything you have concern or hope for – the stage is yours.

Remember we are not gathering for bloodletting — but to give positive voice to our concerns for the need for change.

This is a global event. So far more than 700 cities in 115 countries have signed up to raise their voices.

The North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center is located at 17894 Tyler Foote Road in Nevada City. For information, call (530) 265-2826 or (530) 432-8196.
