On Friday, Paul Emery and Nevada City Live presents An Evening of Bob Dylan Music performed by an all-star lineup of local musicians, including Kelly Fleming, Kimberly Bass, Dream and the Dreamer, Eli Rush, Juliet Gobert and many more to benefit the homeless service organization Divine Spark.

In the wake of the death of Divine Spark founder and executive director Thomas Streicher last March, Shirley Kinghorn, a longtime member of Divine Spark’s board of directors, stepped into the role of interim executive director. Kinghorn, along with a group of dedicated volunteers, are continuing Streicher’s work of providing basic human services such as a weekly lunch program, allocation of donated motor vehicles and bicycles, pet food and veterinarian care, legal and job referral help, meal/food tickets and much more.

“We are hanging on with the support of local merchants and individuals,” said Kinghorn, who also works as a full-time therapist. “Each week we serve around 60 people in a variety of ways. Whatever their needs are, we find a way to meet them.”

Kinghorn says that in the last five years the organization has served some 400 people, many of whom have returned to either volunteer or give a cash donation to the organization that supported them in their time of need. Recently Divine Spark had a major donor offer to match future donations made to the organization including ticket sales from Friday night’s concert.

An Evening of Bob Dylan Music will feature songs that span Dylan’s entire discography of 33 studio albums, 58 singles, 11 live albums, 10 albums comprising “The Bootleg Series” and 30 compilation albums — no small endeavor by any means, but one the local community has come to expect from veteran promoter and musician Paul Emery who is known for bringing together the area’s finest musicians in a night of song. Earlier this year, Emery produced the wildly successful “A Thousand Kisses – The Songs of Leonard Cohen” with more than 15 local musicians.

Attendees of Friday night’s concert will also have the rare opportunity to win an original portrait of Bob Dylan by Nevada City artist and writer Dale Smith.

In 1965, beat poet Allen Ginsberg arranged a private session for Smith and fellow student photographer Larry Keenan to photograph Bob Dylan, Michael McClure and himself in the alley behind City Lights Bookstore. Some of the photos from this session eventually found their way into Dylan’s “Biograph” album.

Tickets to the 8 p.m. Friday event are $20 and available online at http://www.paulemerymusic.com, in person at BriarPatch Co-op, Yabobo, or by phone at 800-838-3006.
