Artwork of Jerry Murphy on exhibit at Smith Vineyard

Smith Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery in downtown Grass Valley on Mill Street is presenting an exhibit of oil paintings by Jerry Murphy, from March 5 to April 30. There is a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday (March 21).

The exhibit features oil paintings, plus a couple of reproductions, of various local scenes as well as a few others.

Murphy has been active in the Nevada County art scene even before moving here permanently in 1996. He has been privileged to have painted with top local art teachers Max (Maxine) Ferry and Phil Brown, Murphy said.

He began oil painting in the Bay Area in the ‘70s in classes at local colleges, workshops, visiting art museums and galleries, and self study.

Murphy has successfully shown his work in many venues: San Mateo and Nevada County Fairs, Sierra Festival of the Arts, Open Studio Tour, Northern Mines Art Show, Art Works Gallery and the Banner Mountain Artisan Show to name a few. He has a nice collection of Best of Show, Best Nevada County Scene and First Place ribbons for his efforts.

He primarily does representational art in oil, depicting local scenes, landscapes, seascapes, people and animals. There are numerous collectors of Murphy’s art both locally and out of the area, according to the artist.
