5th graders to have ‘Law Day’ Sept. 16

About 700 fifth grade students in Nevada County will have a chance Sept. 16 to learn about the court system, law enforcement and the county jail.

The annual “Law Day” field trip is sponsored by the Nevada County Superior Courts, local law enforcement and the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools.

“Law Day” aims to allow fifth grade students to better understand what happens in court and learn about the role of law enforcement.

The courthouse is closed for the day, enabling the estimated 700 students to tour the building while hearing presentations by key stakeholders, such as judges, attorneys, bailiffs and representatives from law enforcement.

Students will visit three stations, which include the following:

• How the Courts Work: Introduction to what takes place in each courtroom, the roles of the judge, district attorney and public defender, and the differences between the criminal, family and juvenile courts.

• The Role of Law Enforcement in the Justice System: To include an overview of basic constitutional rights, such as privacy rights and rights of search and seizure.

• A tour of the old county jail facility area: Tour will be led by a sheriff’s deputy, and will include a presentation from representatives of the Juvenile Drug Court, followed by a question and answer session.
