3 rock dance bands in Grass Valley tonight

The Center for the Arts Discover Series presents three rock bands — Pinnacles, Space Rabies and CJ Boyd — in a dance at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in the Off Center Stage in Grass Valley.

Nevada City experimental rockers Pinnacles are kicking off a 10-day tour of the Pacific Northwest.

Accompanied by fully immersive visual projections, Pinnacles has evolved their many influences in the post rock, shoegaze, and math rock genres into a sharply focused style that is unique to themselves.

Pinnacles formed in the Spring of 2013 when Justin Hunt (sBach, Them Hills, The Bears) brought drummer Zach Peach (This is Radiation, El Dorado) and guitarist Robbie Landsburg (Ghost Pines) together to start working on the material that would become their debut album Automaton. Jesse Kinseth (The Bears) soon joined the band on bass, and the band immediately began recording in their home studio. Despite their relatively brief period as a performing band, Pinnacles has already played multiple sellout shows in the Northern California area.

Music lovers will appreciate Pinnacles' accessibility while they push musical boundaries and challenge the listener in a cerebral yet visceral way. Live, the band confidently maintains solidity throughout the shifting time signatures and dynamic changes that permeate their music. They are a must see for anyone interested in the Northern California math/progressive rock scene.

Space Rabies is an experimental, instrumental Power Trio from Northern California. With an interest in creating original, emotional and interesting music. The band includes Steve Jennings (guitars), Ryan Cirino (drums) and Leif Bo Bonfils (bass). Their sound can be described as "Experimental Groove Rock". They dig deep into their musical backgrounds to create music that suspends the listener somewhere between feeling the groove and thinking about the musical time. Coupled with a unique guitar sound and powerful riffs, Space Rabies signature style is an original and introspective take on hard and psychedelic rock.

Bassist/composer CJ Boyd uses bass, voice, and loops in order to try and stop time. Oceans of sound become naked, lonely melodies become something not yet determined.

Since March 2008, this low-end vagabond has been on a perpetual tour throughout North America and Europe. On his native soil he travels by way of the Jambulance, a repurposed ambulance that has been converted to run on vegetable oil.
