The Miners Foundry Cultural Center presents A Holiday Celebration of Dance, featuring scenes from “The Nutcracker” and original modern dance choreography by Holt Ballet Conservatory and The Movement Alliance at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

For the last two years, Holt Ballet Conservatory in cooperation with The Movement Alliance has provided Nevada County dancers with a comprehensive collection of dance forms, all under one roof. Together, classes are offered daily in ballet, modern, fusion and creative movement at the Odd Fellows Hall in downtown Nevada City. (TMA School has resided at this location since 2008).

Their second annual Holiday Celebration of Dance brings together two distinct and iconic dance forms — ballet and modern. The evening of dazzling dance showcases an array of dancers, from beginners to professionals, performing selections from traditional to contemporary that inspire us by their creativity, move us by their grace, entertain us by their athleticism and makes us all feel more alive.

Holt Ballet Conservatory, directed by teacher and performer Yelena Holt, will present the “Short Story” of Clara and the Nutcracker, which features some of the favorite characters from the classic ballet: Fritz and Nanna, Mother and the Mouse King, tiny mice, toy soldiers who come to life, a magical angel, the Nutcracker and some of the most beautiful ballerinas in Nevada County. Featured dancers include Brenna O’Brien as Clara, Brooke Holland as the Nutcracker, Holly Warner as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Annie Aguilar in the classic role of the Snow Queen and Raina Garfinkel as the loveliest flower of them all, Rose. These beloved scenes are set against the beautiful backdrop of Tchaikovsky’s music, plus a spectacular growing Christmas tree designed by Pam Hodges and Thomas Taylor.

The Movement Alliance (TMA), led by co-founders Lovie Bucknell and Marni Marshall and assistant choreographer Marissa Hernandez, is a recognized regional dance company that is best known for its adventurous and compelling dance pieces. TMA is thrilled to be sharing premiers, showcasing its students in this festive evening. This year, TMA dancers along with members of TMA Junior Company and The Sierra College Dance Club will perform original pieces by Aubrey Puetz, Marissa Hernandez and Lovie Bucknell; featuring the music of Florence and the Machine, Bonobo, Yo Yo Ma and John Lennon and with a special live music collaboration with Jeff Thorsby and Anne Shisko.
