Sheriff: Nevada County man dies in Yuba River

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Department had not released the identity of a 33-year-old man who died Friday afternoon while swimming in the Yuba River.

"The coroner division is waiting on the results," Corporal Jason Spillner said on Sunday afternoon. "We don't have anything right now that we can give details on… There's nothing suspicious about it."

The 33-year-old man died during a swimming excursion with a friend near Bridgeport. Authorities haven’t released his identity. No foul play is suspected, Royal said.

The two people were in the water around 3:30 p.m. at Rice’s Crossing. At some point the friend, his attention elsewhere, looked to the victim and saw him face down in the water, Royal said.

The friend pulled the victim to shore and saw he wasn’t breathing. He then drove to the nearest home and called 911, the sheriff added.

"This seems to be another tragedy at this point in the river," Royal said.

Authorities responded and tried to revive the victim, who was pronounced dead around 4 p.m., the sheriff said.
