Reusable bags are OK

In a perfect world, all the plastic bags we get from the store would be reused or recycled into new products, but it’s estimated that only 1 to 3 percent of plastic bags are recycled.

Instead, they mostly end up in landfills or blowing across roads or into waterways, creating an eyesore and harming wildlife.

I’ve used reusable shopping bags for about three years. It takes a few weeks to remember to bring your own bag, but once you do, it’s really not that difficult. And I’ve never had a health problem from shopping with reusable bags. A statewide plastic shopping bag ban is inevitable; if we can pass our own ordinance here before that happens, we’re likely to have more control on how it works.

Let’s figure out what works best for us and get it going.
