Nevada City needs to ban plastic bags

I'm 15 years old and am one of the vice presidents of The Environmental Committee Of Nevada Union (ECONU). I believe we need to ban plastic bags in Nevada City as well as Nevada County.

We should also put a 10-cent tax on paper bags. The production of plastic bags requires petroleum and natural gas, which adds to global warming. Thirteen billion plastic bags are distributed annually in California and only 3 percent are recycled. A single plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to degrade. To make matters worse, plastic bags remain toxic even after they break down.

According to the UN, "10 percent of the plastic produced every year worldwide winds up in the ocean," where many animals mistake the small bits of plastic for food. Plastic bags can also wrap and suffocate the endangered living coral reefs.

As a green and eco-conscious community, it seems that banning plastic bags is an obvious choice. Ninety-nine cities in California including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Marin County have successfully banned plastic bags, as well as taxed paper bags. I hope that our town will soon do the same!
