Local favorite Deadbeats make rare appearance

Fans of local favorite The Deadbeats get a rare chance to catch the band on stage tonight, serving as the opening act for The Fall Risk in Auburn.

Both bands will perform as part of a Harvest Concert & CD Release Party for The Fall Risk, slated to start at 8 p.m. at the Auburn Events Center.

The Fall Risk is the brainchild of Furthur vocalist and Box Set front man Jeff Pehrson, offering an infectious Americana folk-rock sound with enough groove to get you up and moving.

The seven-member San Francisco-based band is loaded with talented players who consistently elevate Pehrson’s journeyman songwriting. Joining Pehrson is Phil Savell (lead guitar), Mark Abbott (drums and percussion), Sammy Johnston (organ, accordion, harmonica, peddle steel), Rich Goldstein (rhythm, slide guitars), Matt Twain (keyboards, vocals) and Mike Sugar (bass).

“Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and the rest of the gang at Furthur picked Jeff Pehrson to be part of the fun for good reasons!” said Scott Holbrook at Keep Smilin’ Promotions. “Jeff’s soulful voice adds a ton to the band, but Jeff has a lot more tricks in his bag, and his band, Fall Risk, is where the magic is performed! Jeff and the crew will be celebrating the release of their new CD and making a very special appearance at the Auburn Event Center.

“But to put this special Harvest Show way up high, I am bringing back The Deadbeats for a very special and rare performance. This will be a very special evening.”

The Deadbeats, which has been playing locally for nearly two decades, is a tight group that not only plays Grateful Dead music well, it also performs its own carefully crafted songs.

“They usually get the audience up on their feet for dancing and even some twirling!” Holbrook said. “The Deadbeats are not literally attempting to play like The Dead but really take each song and play it as their own. They truly capture the spirit of the Grateful Dead in their own unique way.”

The Deadbeats is comprised of Paul Kamm (lead guitar, vocals) Eric Menig (bass guitar), Tom Menig (lead guitar, vocals), Gary Campus (drums), Mark McCartney (drums) — two complete drum kits creating a dynamic rhythm duo — and Glenn Tucker (keyboards, effects and vocals).

Appearances by The Deadbeats have been recently rare as Kamm, Campus and McCartney have also been busy performing with their band, Achilles Wheel.
