Alleged abuse should be reported, not used to divide community

I just got home from attending the Nevada County Fairgrounds board of directors meeting where the speakers opposing the presence of the elephants at the fair far outnumbered those in favor.

While I don¹t agree with those opponents, I admire the passion and commitment they bring to their cause. I just wish that some of that passion and commitment would be directed to helping solve the tremendous problems our country faces.

It seemed to me that most of the opposition to the elephants was based on their allegations that “Have Trunk Will Travel” treats their elephants in a cruel and abusive manner. However, it was also brought up that cruel and abusive treatment of animals is against the law.

Thus, it seems to me that their accusations should be brought to the attention of the officials charged with enforcing the law and not used to divide our community and create a conflictive atmosphere at the fair, probably our single most important asset in the county.
