CHP: Rough and Ready man killed after high-speed chase on I-80

TRUCKEE — A 55-year-old Rough and Ready man involved in a high-speed chase with California Highway Patrol on Interstate 80 Monday afternoon was killed after his vehicle collided with a dirt embankment and rolled several times.

The California Highway Patrol originally identified the suspect as a 42-year-old Reno man based on documentation left in the car from its previous owner; officials on Tuesday morning released the correct name, age and residence of the man after a coroner examination.

William Orr was reported at about 1:30 p.m. Monday as driving recklessly in a 1989 BMW 3 Series convertible, at high speeds, and using the shoulders on I-80 eastbound at Dutch Flat as passing lanes.

Orr failed to stop when officers tried to pull him over, instead accelerating to speeds exceeding 100 mph. A pursuit continued eastbound into the Truckee CHP area and eventually over Donner Summit, with the BMW abruptly exiting at Donner Pass Road, driving over the overcrossing and entering I-80 westbound.

As Orr approached Soda Springs in excess of 100 mph, he entered a coned-off lane closure where a California Conservation Corps crew was working. He lost control of the BMW before colliding with a dirt embankment and overturning several times. As the car overturned, it struck two CCC workers as they attempted to get out of the way.

Fresno resident Linda Heuangpaseud, 23, suffered a head injury and was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno by CareFlight, while Fresno resident Jose Gabriel Garcia, 19, complained of shoulder pain.

Heuangpaseud was listed as discharged, said Stacy Kendall, Renown spokesperson.

Orr, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. CHP is investigating the incident.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story falsely listed the deceased residence due to inaccurate information provided to The Union news service. William Orr was a Rough and Ready resident.
