‘Greater Tuna’ show to benefit larger charity event

Coming to a stage near you, is the hilarious comedy play of “Greater Tuna,” a two-man performance, starring Ryan Harber and Owen Smith and directed by Christopher Cook of the Green Valley (Grange Theater Company).

“Greater” Tuna is the first in a series of four comedic plays, each set in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, the “third-smallest” town in the state. The series was written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard. The plays are at once an affectionate comment on small-town, Southern life and attitudes but also a withering satire of same.

The plays are notable in that two men play the entire cast of more than 20 eccentric characters of both genders and various ages. “Greater Tuna” debuted in Austin, Texas, in the fall of 1981 and had its off-Broadway premiere in 1982.

This production of “Greater Tuna” will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mt. Vernon Grange Hall located at 3185 Bell Road, in Auburn. This hilarious comedy play features two of Green Valley (Grange) Theatre’s veterans who portray nearly every one of Tuna’s residents in a one-stop, irreverent romp through classic Americana. This show runs approximately 1 hour, 35 minutes and is appropriate for all ages.

Mt. Vernon Grange Hall will present this performance (now touring Northern California) as a fundraiser to benefit both the Auburn Grange and another local charity. This benefit is part of an event that will be followed up June 15 at Placer and Nevada County Grange and Local Charity Awareness Day that will help promote all of the local Granges as well as several charities including Red Cross, Disabled American Veterans, and Scooter’s Pals, Gatekeepers, What Would Jesus Do, St Vincent de Paul, just to mention a few. One of the attending charities in June will share the proceeds from the April performance through a random drawing. The winner will be announced during the June event.

Tickets for Sunday’s performance are $10. Contact the Grange Office at 530-885-3974 for ticket information or go on line to www.MtVernonGrange.org. Make checks payable to Mt Vernon Grange – Greater Tuna.
