Downtown association seeking sponsors to open rink to all

The Grass Valley Downtown Association intends to entertain the community and increase tourism in downtown Grass Valley this winter by installing a temporary ice-skating rink at Gold Country Inn-Holiday Inn Express Jan. 18-21.

The family-friendly weekend will also feature a DJ and a life-size snow globe, where guests can go inside to take photos.

With no intention of making a profit, the GVDA is aiming to keep admission costs as low as possible with hopes of eliminating them all together, according to a news release. The goal is to
obtain enough business sponsors so it does not have to charge admission.

“We really think it is possible to offer free admission to the rink the entire weekend because we see the value we are offering sponsors,” said GVDA executive director Julia Jordan.

“This is more than just a place to hang a banner but a real chance to thank your current customers and build relationships with new ones by giving something back to the community.

“We will have succeeded if
the only cost is a small rental fee for skates, which is currently
set at $3.”

Businesses can host a “Free Community Skate” where they would be recognized exclusively during their skate session as the reason the event is free. There is also the opportunity to get a logo printed on the ice or on the custom backdrop of the life-size snow globe.

Any additional revenue generated through sponsorships will be directed into the rink, the release states.

With enough support, the GVDA would look into making the rink available for a few weeks next year and possibly even buy a rink for Grass Valley in the years to come.

The GVDA plans to have an incentive program in place this week for a voucher for a free skate rental when a customer spends $50 or more at participating business.
