Hospitality House funding sorely needed

A nasty gastro-intestinal virus has been circulating our community. It causes severe vomiting and diarrhea.

I recently learned that it made its rounds at Hospitality House. Guests, staff and some volunteers were afflicted. Because I work with these people I understand how difficult it is to be on the street even when conditions are optimal, but I just can’t imagine how horrible it would be not to have a bed or toilet nearby if I was in that condition.

If Hospitality House is able to open their year-round facility there will be a place where the homeless who are sick can go. Right know they’re out on the streets from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

But to open their new facility they are in dire need of funding. They need $300,000 by November in order to open or they may lose their opportunity. This is an opportunity for all and is an easy goal if everyone contributed just a little. Most of us have something we can give.

Personally, I’m ashamed of the amount of food I waste when I clean out my refrigerator. I’m thinking of putting a dollar away for each item I throw out. I’m always amazed at the people who come by to donate who are on unemployment or struggling to get by themselves. Most of us can give something. Please search your hearts and ask what you can sacrifice to keep this vital service in our community.
