Have Trunk Will Travel: ‘Save a species; ride an elephant’
July 5, 2013
The Have Trunk Will Travel elephants have been invited by the Nevada County Fair to celebrate your "Under the Big Top" theme this year. We are planning some big fun to encourage folks to help us fight for the endangered Asian elephant's survival. Our motto is Save A Species – Ride An Elephant.
A London-based animal rights business, Animal Defenders International, is spearheading a campaign to cancel our contract with the fair. The issue will be on the agenda at the board of directors meeting at 4 p.m., July 16, at the fairgrounds. We do not believe the vocal animal rights organizations speak for your community.
ADI has been making unfounded allegations against HTWT using a shock video they produced and edited, calling it "evidence" of abusive training methods. Although filmed in 2005, the video was not released until 2011. At that time, it was viewed and investigated by legitimate animal care and welfare authorities and organizations. HTWT was not sanctioned, cited, fined or denied renewal of any permit or license required for us to house, travel with or show our elephants.
The fact is that in the 40 years we have had elephants, we have earned an excellent reputation for our standard of elephant care and for our contributions to elephant conservation.
Nevada County fair-goers should decide whether or not they want elephants at their fair. We believe most people would love to meet our elephants. Whether to have elephant rides at the fair may seem trivial, but animal rights organizations are working hard to bulldoze animals, not just elephants, out of your fair and out of our lives. If you don't make your opinion known it could happen in the near future.
Please take a moment of your valuable time to let the fair board and your community leaders know what you think.
Save a species; ride an elephant!
