Citizens for Choice enters its 25th year

Please join Citizens for Choice in celebrating 24 years of advocacy for you, our Nevada County community.

Citizens for Choice will be hosting its fall fundraiser 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday at 151 Union Square in Grass Valley. There will be music and an auction, delicious hors d’oeuvres and celebrating as we enter our 25th year with having completed exciting accomplishments and the setting of specific strategic goals.

Visit citizensforchoice.org for tickets or send checks to P.O. Box 3525, Grass Valley, CA 95945.

In 1989, an alliance between the American Association of University Women (http://aauwnevada county.org ), Business and Professional Women of Nevada County (http://bpwnevadacounty.org ), and the League of Women Voters (http://lwvwnc.org) was formed. This alliance of women’s leadership recognized the important need in our Nevada County community for unbiased sex-education and access to reproductive health care. The alliance of women strongly felt that choice — the choice to have children or not, and when — is an absolute right for all people.

Citizens for Choice became an independent organization in 1992. And in 2006, Citizens for Choice began its partnership with Women’s Health Specialists to open “The Clinic!” at 120 Richardson St., Suite A, in Grass Valley, providing services to 250-plus clients per month.

This year, 2013, has been a great year for Citizens for Choice. We have worked hard, together, to reinvigorate our board, create and implement a strong strategic plan and develop a sex-education program that we are very excited to be launching in 2014.

Citizens for Choice’s volunteer board is a dynamic group of women activists — representing a variety of age groups — all of whom are collectively united by Citizens for Choice’s belief that every woman, man and teen deserves reproductive justice: The ability to make educated choices about their reproductive lives and health and access the affordable care they need.

And let’s face it, friends, we all know it’s really not just about pregnancy. Sexually transmitted infections don’t discriminate. Whether you’re a teen, a young woman or man, middle-aged or older, identify as heterosexual or LGBTQ, sexually transmitted infections and sexual health play very important roles in all our lives.

In 2014, Citizens for Choice will be rolling out two major programs, which we will overview at the fall fundraiser:

1. Our “Know It and Own It” sex education program, specifically developed to educate our community about what a “life plan” is; what being sexually aware and responsible really means— empowering individuals to make powerful choices by giving them the tools to literally “know” the information and “own it” in their lives.

2. Our “Walk the Talk” campaign: A focused target outreach to our community around sexual health and how to protect yourself against STIs. Our Citizens for Choice volunteers will literally be “walking our talk” by meeting teens, the homeless and others on our local streets, introducing themselves and offering education and resources and also awareness about the prevalence of chlamydia in our community, the risks of HPV and herpes and how to access free and low-cost services at The Clinic!

Citizens for Choice is a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit public health corporation. Our purpose is to provide information, education and services in support of reproductive rights. All contributions to our organization are tax deductible per current tax law, and you can make a donation or contact us at: http://citizensforchoice.org or P.O. Box 3525, Grass Valley, California, 95945.

Thank you in advance for your generous support.
