Salon supports local schools, programs

Year after year our schools suffer budget cuts that are affecting a lot of their programs. Some are funded very little or not at all. I think we all would agree that it is important to keep our children active, motivated and able to have the opportunity to expand their minds.

Most of these programs would not be possible without the great support of our communities. For instance, the Nevada Union Baseball team is completely reliant on fundraisers and donations to keep the teams going. Coach Craig Fleenor has stated, “money raised goes towards uniforms, equipment, game umpires, transportation and managers.”

Seven Hills has been sending its sixth-graders to science camp for the past 28 years. The cost this year is $450 per child. Sixth-grade teacher Stephanie Facchini hopes fundraisers will help lower the cost or provide scholarships for kids that can’t afford the cost.

Union Hill’s music program lost its funding a few years ago. David Lynn, fourth-grade teacher and head of the “before and after” school music groups, has had to rely on fundraisers and donations to keep the music program running.

Nevada Union Tech High School is an alternative high school for juniors and seniors, which offers one-on-one teaching to students who are in either an ROP program or Work Experience Education, which has hands-on learning.

And then we have the Kiwanis International Foundation. This foundation provides and supports many programs for our schools. It also sponsors the Kmart Back to School program, which provides children with clothes and supplies needed for school.

As you can see, each program has its own special, significant effect on our children, which is why VJ’s Salon & Day Spa is pleased to announce it is having multiple fundraisers to support these programs: Seven Hills Sixth Grade Science Camp, Union Hill Music, Nevada Union Baseball, Nevada Union Tech High School and Kiwanis International Foundation.

When you book an appointment, just mention one of the choices listed, and 10 percent of your total sale will go towards that program. We will cut a check at each month’s end, per school or program, reflecting the totals for each month. This will be an ongoing fundraiser all through the school year of 2013-14. Don’t forget to mention your choice!
